McLouvre?

If you’ve been to France lately, especially Paris, this news is not all that shocking. Sad perhaps, but not shocking. It appears a McDonalds is opening in the “mini-mall” underneath the Louvre…not in the Louvre as many have reported. The “mall”  or Carrousel du Louvre  is home to a Starbucks, Virgin Megastore and a Sephora, to mention a few.

McDonalds became a second home of sorts for my boyfriend, who lived in Paris for two months earlier this year–it was one of the only places he could find a reliable wifi connection in the entire city! I’ve been lucky enough to visit Paris on several occasions, most recently in April of this year when I joined my afore mentioned paramour for an amazing adventure. I was surprised to learn just how imbedded McDonalds has become in Parisian life. They are everywhere and always packed–the French love their “McDo”!

It is truly magical when you journey under the pyramid to enter the Louvre, especially in the evening. It certainly can’t be enhanced with a drive-thru window or super-sizing the Mona Lisa.

Jumping Jerboas and Sarah Palin…blogging in a strange, strange world

Posted in animals, celebrity tagged , , at 8:39 pm by Skybluepink

It’s been a busy summer and I have to say it’s been hard to find time to sit down and blog. I logged in today with the goal of writing a quick missive. However, I was surprised to see just how many hits I’ve been receiving even though I haven’t posted in over a month. And the reason for all of the hits? Jerboas and Sarah Palin! It’s a strange, strange world when the most searched words are about rare fluffy animals with huge ears, and  fluffy ex-governors with huge egos…

I’m back from the trip of  a lifetime. I truly had the most amazing time in Paris and look forward to blogging about it all soon. In the meantime, I’ll post the random, the bizarre and the interesting until I have collected my thoughts and photos.

I came across this cute little critter over the weekend on Cute Overload…the Pygmy Jerboa…the perfect pocket-sized pet.

Paris in the spring time…

New adventures are on the horizon and, as of April 6, I’ll be in Paris for almost one month…yes…I’m excited! I’ve been to Paris before, it’s an amazing city, but each trip was short–a few days to madly dash around and see as much of the city as possible. After three separate trips I still have so much to see and experience in Paris. My boyfriend has rented an apartment in the heart of the city and we’re looking forward to immersing ourselves in the culture…the real Paris.

So this is where you come in. I’m asking for audience participation here…if you’ve been to Paris and have a favourite restaurant, park, gallery, store, museum, market—tell me about it. I’m not talking the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower (don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait to visit the Louvre again), I’m looking for the places that the locals love. Places that you’ve been to, fell in love with, that aren’t in the tourist guides.

Photos from previous trips…

Suck it Sarah!

Just over a week ago the ever annoying Sarah Palin decided that she needed to tell the world how mean Katie Couric and Tina Fey had been to her over the course of her brief yet painful stint on the 2008 US election campaign trail. In an interview   with conservative John Ziegler, Palin demonstrated one more time why she is totally unqualified to lead anything other than a corporate cheer at a Walmart store or a caribou hunting party. She bitched and whined about the Couric interview where she took heat for appearing unable to name the newspapers or magazines she reads: “Um of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years,” was the Alaska governor’s response (brilliant, well done!) In the Ziegler interview, Palin called that answer “too flippant” and suggested the question itself offended her…why yes, how dare Couric ask an obviously unqualified twit what newspapers she reads when its so apparent she has no clue about current national or world affairs!

“To me the question was more along the lines of, ‘Do you read, what do you guys do up there, what is it that you read?’…Katie, you’re not the center of everybody’s universe,” Palin added. Well done Sarah! You told her, very Vice-Presidential of you…seems like someone hit a nerve!

Palin also took a shot at Tina Fey, questioning how exactly she was named entertainer of the year for 2008. I think Fey’s impeccable, and quite frankly, hilairous  impersonations of Palin had something to do with it…with the spoof of the Couric interview being the icing on the cake.

On Sunday, January 11 the “who’s who?” of Hollywood (a legitimate question in the era of plastic surgery, peels and botox) gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to slap each other on the back and learn who were the “winners” of the 66th Annual Golden Globes. One of the honorees was Tina Fey. Fey won a Golden Globe for her performance on 30 Rock but her acceptance speech was a chance to get back at her critics, and perhaps Palin. She told her anonymous Internet haters to “suck-it”. I’m quite sure that those who have chosen to send “hate-mail” to Fey are those who have blindly chosen to support Sarah Palin.

Here’s the transcript of her acceptance speech:

“I want to say thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press. I’ll always love the Hollywood Foreign Press and have all the Hollywood Foreign Press action figures. Thank you, Will Arnett, for that joke. But I want you to really know how lucky I am to have the year I’ve had this year and, if you ever start to feel too good about yourself, they have this thing called the Internet! You can find a lot of people there who don’t like you! I’d like to address some of them now! BabsonLacrosse, you can suck it. DianeFan, you can suck it. Cougar Lover, you can really suck it ’cause you’ve been after me all year. And to my husband, Jeff, I love you. Thank you very much! “

Suck-it Sarah!

In a reflective mood tonight, or is it morning now? Anyway, here’s a favourite song from my childhood that’s currently on my ipod and on my mind. There’s a millipede in this video but he’s neither hot pink or bitchy.

Enjoy…

Hot-pink and bitchy

You may have heard that more than 1,000 new species were found in the Greater Mekong area between 1997 and 2007.  Amazing discoveries, from spiders the size of dinner plates to woolly bats, but perhaps the most intriguing of all these creatures is the Pink Dragon Millipede (Desmoxytes purpurosea)

Pink Dragon Millipede

The millipede may look “pretty” but this is not a candy-coated cuddley critter…it’s spiny and toxic and shoots cyanide if “bugged”. Far from a fashion statement, the millipede’s colour is designed to warn potential predators of its toxicity.

For some reason this image pops into my head…

Got skim milk?

Posted in Food, Rant, Victoria tagged , , , , , at 10:57 pm by Skybluepink

Evidently not, if you go to the new Tim Hortons in downtown Victoria, and never will by the sounds of it.  Downtown Victoria has been “waiting” for a Tim Hortons for years, but a new outlet just opened on Blanshard street near the centre of town. I am not a fan of Timmy Ho-Ho’s, I prefer the local coffee shops and Starbucks to be honest, but lately I’ve been heading to Timmy’s with a group of co-workers as part of our morning caffeine ritual.

On our first trip I was actually surprised to learn that Timmy’s does not offer skim milk as an option for your tea or coffee. Since then I have asked for skim milk several times in an attempt to demonstrate a “need”. My co-workers have asked too, and time after time we’ve been given an “oh you are so annoying” eye-roll and the standard line “we don’t serve that”.

Complain you say? Yes, we did! We even wrote to Timmy’s HQ and were told if we simply asked for skim milk the store manager would oblige. Not quite! I asked a manager last week, who reminded me of a female ultimate fighting champion, and was told “not only do we not offer skim milk but we are never going to get it…no one likes it or asks for it…thank-you!” No… thank you!

I know, I know…what did I expect from a place that serves candy-cane hot chocolate with candy-cane donuts?
