McLouvre?

If you’ve been to France lately, especially Paris, this news is not all that shocking. Sad perhaps, but not shocking. It appears a McDonalds is opening in the “mini-mall” underneath the Louvre…not in the Louvre as many have reported. The “mall”  or Carrousel du Louvre  is home to a Starbucks, Virgin Megastore and a Sephora, to mention a few.

McDonalds became a second home of sorts for my boyfriend, who lived in Paris for two months earlier this year–it was one of the only places he could find a reliable wifi connection in the entire city! I’ve been lucky enough to visit Paris on several occasions, most recently in April of this year when I joined my afore mentioned paramour for an amazing adventure. I was surprised to learn just how imbedded McDonalds has become in Parisian life. They are everywhere and always packed–the French love their “McDo”!

It is truly magical when you journey under the pyramid to enter the Louvre, especially in the evening. It certainly can’t be enhanced with a drive-thru window or super-sizing the Mona Lisa.

Paris in the spring time…

New adventures are on the horizon and, as of April 6, I’ll be in Paris for almost one month…yes…I’m excited! I’ve been to Paris before, it’s an amazing city, but each trip was short–a few days to madly dash around and see as much of the city as possible. After three separate trips I still have so much to see and experience in Paris. My boyfriend has rented an apartment in the heart of the city and we’re looking forward to immersing ourselves in the culture…the real Paris.

So this is where you come in. I’m asking for audience participation here…if you’ve been to Paris and have a favourite restaurant, park, gallery, store, museum, market—tell me about it. I’m not talking the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower (don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait to visit the Louvre again), I’m looking for the places that the locals love. Places that you’ve been to, fell in love with, that aren’t in the tourist guides.

Talk Talk, or simply listen

In a reflective mood tonight, or is it morning now? Anyway, here’s a favourite song from my childhood that’s currently on my ipod and on my mind. There’s a millipede in this video but he’s neither hot pink or bitchy.

Enjoy…

An afternoon at the art gallery

I recently saw the Warhol exhibit at The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. It was good to see an exhibit like this in Victoria. While I’ve been to the gallery many times (the last few times for weddings), it’s been a while since they’ve had an exhibit that I really wanted to see. The exhibit had a little bit of everything, from casual sketches to the iconic images of Marilyn Monroe and the Queen. The exhibit had a strong Canadian flavour, including pieces that were shown at Expo 67 in Montreal. Curator Mary Jo Hughes wanted to show the Canadian influence in Warhol’s work. It was the Wayne Gretzky portrait that truly caught my attention. No, I’m not a hockey fan but I’ve lived in Canada long enough to understand his iconic status. I think Warhol was quite taken with the young man; Gretzky however looked shy and a tad apprehensive.

“As an artist, what I see in Wayne is great joy and energy,” said Warhol at the time. “I think it’s great when a sports star can look like a movie star.” I’m guessing Andy wasn’t a hockey fan either.
